Overview of Transition 4

This transition attempts to prove that John H. Pyle and family migrated from Yamhill Co, Oregon back to California in 1862 and settled in Tulare Co, CA by 1867

Importance of Transition 4

This transition is compatible with the tall-tale that John J. Poill told in the 1924 newspaper article (see ref) of organizing southern men in Yamhill Co during the Civil War and traveling to Forth Worth, TX to fight on the side of the Confederacy. While this story is most likely untrue, it is very possible that he did do some rabble rousing with the local southern men in Yamhill Co, OR and some of them may have made the trip to California with him and his family in 1862. Also, his reference to Fort Worth, TX which is in Tarrant Co, TX is provocative (see transition 1, transition 2).

Summary

John H. Pyle and his wife Amanda Barnes migrated to Yamhill Co, OR and lived there for two years in the 1860 to 1862 timeframe. At the time, Yamhill Co had a large number of southern sympathizers.

Proof of Transition 4

1. Yamhill Co, OR

Proposed:

John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes were living in Yamhill Co, Or in 1860 –62.

Proof:

2. Migrating back to California

Proposed:

John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes returned to California in about 1862.

Proof:

According to Amanda’s divorce deposition, John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes lived in Oregon. Amanda responds to the question of how long have you lived in this county (i.e., Azusa Co, CA where the divorce was granted) with “Two years last December and in this state since 1859 excepting two years in Oregon from 60 to sometime to 62.”

Proposed:

John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes settled in Tule River, Tulare Co, CA by 1867.

Proof:

This is easily proved by looking at the 1869 Tulare Co Great Register in which John H. Pyle registered on July 23, 1867. Also, the 1870 census confirms that the John H. Pyle family lived in Tulare Co, CA in 1870.

Conclusion:

· John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes migrated from Oregon back to California in about 1862.

· John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes were in Tule River, Tulare Co, CA by 1867.
