T3: Transition:  CA to OR

Theory

Overview of Transition 3

This transition attempts to prove that John H. Pyle and family migrated from El Monte, Los Angeles Co, CA  to Yamhill Co, Oregon and lived there from about 1860 to 1862.

Importance of Transition 3

This  transition accounts for the story John J. Poill told in the 1924 newspaper article (see  ref) of organizing southern men in Yamhill Co during the Civil War.  Also, this transition supports John H. Pyle’s migration to Oregon in about 1872 to become John J. Poill (i.e., he was already familiar with Oregon and how to travel from California to Oregon).

Summary

John H. Pyle and his wife Amanda Barnes were living in El Monte, CA in 1860.  Living near them was the family of Henson McCoy (see ref1. ref2).  Henson McCoy was married to Clarissa F. Rusher who was the half-sister of Amanda Barnes (i.e., Henson was Amanda’s brother-in-law).  The Henson McCoy family was always close to John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes.  The two families were always living near each other.  The Henson McCoy family migrated to Yamhill Co, OR in about 1861.  The point of this transition 3 is to prove that John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes actually migrated with the McCoy family and lived near each other in Yamhill Co, Oregon in the 1860 to 1862 timeframe.

Proof of Transition 3

1. El Monte, CA

Proposed:

John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes were living in El Monte, CA in 1860.

Proof:

See T2: Transition:  TX to CA.

2. Migrating to Oregon

Proposed:

John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes migrated to Oregon in about 1860.

Proof:

According to Amanda’s divorce deposition, John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes lived in Oregon between 1860 and 1862.  Amanda responds to the question of how long have you lived in this county (i.e., Azusa Co, CA where the divorce was granted) with “Two years last December and in this state since 1859 excepting two years in Oregon from 60 to sometime to 62.”

3. Living in Yamhill Co, OR:

Proposed:

In particular, during these two years, John H. Pyle and Amanda Barnes migrated to Yamhill Co, OR with the Henson McCoy family.

Proof:

The Henson McCoy family moved to Yamhill Co, OR in the 1860 to 1867 timeframe (see ref).  The Henson McCoy family was always close to John and Amanda keeping the two half-sisters (Amanda and Clarissa) close.  In particular, the Henson McCoy family was in Tarrant Co, TX at the same time that Amanda Barnes and John H. Pyle were there (see ref).  Also, the Henson McCoy family came out west to El Monte, CA (most likely on the “Barnes” wagon train) and lived near John and Amanda in El Monte, CA in 1860.  Since we know that John and Amanda migrated to Oregon for a time (see above) and that Henson McCoy family migrated to Yamhill Co, OR at about the same time, then we can assume that the two families traveled to Oregon together and ended up in Yamhill Co, OR in the 1860 - 1862 timeframe.

Conclusion:

· John and Amanda migrated to Oregon in about 1860.

· In particular John and Amanda migrated to Yamhill Co, OR with the Henson McCoy family.
