When was John J. Poill Born?My estimate (yes it is just an educated guess) as to when J J Poill was born is: Dec 8, 1835. This is contrary to the fact that G-Grandpa Poill celebrated his "100th" birthday on Dec 8, 1926. The event was covered extensively in the local newspaper, the Eugene Register Guard. However, John J Poill was never straight about how old he was. I think he was a little embarrassed that he had married my Grandmother when she had just turned 15 years old (this means they were "dating" when she was 14 and he was 36!) so in the early years (1872 to 1900) he wanted to appear younger than he was. But after 1900, G-Grandpa Poill's age started to stretch in an era when the old pioneers were being honored. The result was that on Dec 8, 1826 he was a centenarian when he was in fact only 91 years old! The following table shows the various ages which John J. Poill (John H. Pyle) and Mila Ann Eaton stated during their lives: |

I have prepared a J. J. Poill Year Counter which incorporates the various ages of John H. Pyle and John J. Poill. Here are some notes:
1. As stated previously, I think J J Poill is in fact John H. Pyle. 2. John J. Poill stated that he was the 3rd child of Nicholas E Poil (sic) and Mary Ann Westbrook (source). 3. Nicholas E Pyle and Mary Westbrook were married on 20 Jan 1831 (source) 4. The verified children of Nicholas E. Pyle and Mary Ann Westbrook were 1) Everett, 2) Nicholas H, and 3) John H (source) 5. Everett, the first child, appears in the 1860 census (1860 census date was 1 June 1860) as 27 years old. Therefore he was born after 1 June 1832. Also, Everett was deeded property as the "beloved son" on 20 Aug 1832 (source). Therefore he was born before 20 Aug 1832. Conclusion: The first child Everett was born between 1 June 1832 and 20 Aug 1832. 6. Nicholas H Pyle is buried in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery in Winston Co, MS. His tombstone says he died 15 Oct 1895 at the age of 61 yrs, 10 mos, 7 days. Conclusion: The second child, Nicholas H, was born on Dec 8, 1833. 7. My G-Grandfather's birthday was Dec 8 (yes this is the same birthday as Nicholas H. Pyle, hum..) (source). His birthday of Dec 8 is considered true in this analysis. 8. Therefore it is reasonable that John H. Pyle (AKA John J Poill) as born on Dec 8, 1835 which is reasonable spacing of the children of Nicholas and Mary Ann. 9. John H. Pyle was 24 years old in the 1860 census. This is considered the true or base age for both John H. Pyle and John J. Poill. The J. J. Poill Year Counter is set to make this his age. 10. John H. Pyle was 31 in the 1867 Great Register recorded on Jul 23, 1867. This age corresponds exactly to his 1860 census age. 11. The various stated ages of John J. Poill are unreliable. There is no internal consistency between the age he states at one point in time and the age he states at other points in time. |
