(Eugene Register Guard - December 1928)

J. J. (Uncle Jack) Poill, 102 years of age, passed away at his home, 32 Fifteenth avenue east, Monday noon, following an illness of several weeks.

One of the very few centenarians of this vicinity and one of the few surviving pioneers in Oregon who came to the western country in the fifties. Mr. Poill had lived a colorful career such as was known only to the many pioneers who crossed the plains.

He was born Dec. 8, 1826, in Mississippi. He was left an orphan at the age of seven years. At the time he lived in Texas and grew up there in the exciting days of Indian troubles. He was a member of the famous Texas Rangers and during his younger days had many encounters with Indiana and smugglers. Throughout the rest of his life he carried scars on his face, sustained in Indian fights.

In 1857 with seven companions Mr. Poill made the trip across the plains by cayuse. The party camped near Eugene, then a mere village, one night. They then went to Yamhill and on to Portland, Idaho, and Eastern Oregon.

He returned to the Lane County vicinity, later end Married Mila Ann Eaton, daughter of Joseph and Matilda Eaton, living then near Cottage Grove. Five children were born to Mr, and Mrs. Poill, two sons and three daughters.  Only two daughters survive, Mrs. E. J. Tibbetts of Sacramento, Cal., and Mrs. L. P. Miller of Talent, Oregon. A daughter-in-law, Mrs. Estella Poill, lives at 662 Fourteenth avenue east, :Eugene. There are five grandchildren surviving, Miss Dorothy Poill of Portland, and Misses Juanita and Willetta Miller of Talent, and Misses Maxine and Zulieme Tibbetts of Sacramento.

Mr. and Mrs. Poill lived it Springfield until 1895 when they came to Eugene where they have since resided.

Mr. Poill was a• member of the Methodist Episcopal church and of the 1. 0. 0. F Lodge.

Two years ago when .Mr. Poill celebrated his one hundredth birthday anniverary, more then 12 of his family were present for the occasion.

Illness prevented a similar observation on his birthday this year, Dec. 8, when he was 102 years old.
